If you’ve ever been told to “bounce back” after having a baby, this one’s for you.

At Black Iron, we’re done with the toxic bounce-back narrative. In this episode of Black Iron Radio, coaches Joyce, Christin, and Chloe dive into what postpartum really looks and feels like—emotionally, mentally, and physically. Spoiler: it’s not about shrinking back to who you were. It’s about expanding into who you’re becoming.

The Real Origins of the “Bounce-Back” Pressure

That pressure to “get your body back” didn’t come out of nowhere. From magazine covers to Instagram posts, women are bombarded with the idea that their worth is measured by how quickly they can look like they were never pregnant. For athletes and fitness-minded moms, that pressure can come from within, too—rooted in years of identity tied to performance, leanness, and discipline.

But here’s the truth: you aren’t the same person you were before, and that’s not a bad thing. You’re evolving. Your body is too.

The Physical and Emotional Cost of the Bounce-Back Mindset

Postpartum already demands everything from you—emotionally, physically, logistically. Piling on expectations to “return” to your old body can make recovery and mental health harder, not better. That version of you before kids? She’s not gone, but she’s not the full picture anymore either.

The sooner we normalize what’s real—hormonal chaos, identity shifts, surprise tears, stretch marks, pelvic floor issues—the sooner we can start healing in a way that honors what our bodies have actually done.

What Postpartum Actually Looks Like

Think: hormone swings, broken sleep, new routines, and a crash course in adapting. It’s not linear. It’s not always Instagram-worthy. But it is full of transformation.

From unexpected waves of anxiety to navigating unsolicited comments (yes, even from well-meaning loved ones), the first year postpartum can feel like walking through a fog. But when you shift your focus from shrinking your body to supporting your body, the fog starts to clear.

Reframing the Goal

Instead of chasing old jeans or a scale number, the goal becomes feeling strong, capable, and joyful in this new chapter. Christin and Chloe both share how they guide clients through these mindset shifts—helping them reconnect to movement, nutrition, and habits that serve them now, not five years ago.

If you’re working with a coach, you’re not just getting macros or workout suggestions. You’re getting someone to remind you that you are so much more than your pant size. That your goals are valid, but your why matters more than your weight.

Practical Non-Negotiables for the First Six Months

Here’s what we do prioritize postpartum:

  • Hydration: Water is queen. Especially if you’re nursing. Get a bottle with a handle and a straw—trust us.

  • Easy meals: Freezer burritos, breakfast sandwiches, one-handed snacks. Whatever gets you fuel without the fuss.

  • Grace: Grace looks like adjusting expectations, skipping workouts without guilt, and choosing rest without shame.

Social Media vs. Reality

Not everything you see is real. The “snapback” videos, the polished selfies—they’re 15 seconds of someone’s 24-hour day. You’re not behind. You’re just in your season.

If you need to, log off. Or follow voices that make you feel seen—not small.

You’re Not Behind. You’re Becoming.

To the mom who thinks she’s not doing enough: you’re already doing the most. Shift the focus from chasing a version of you that no longer exists to building forward with confidence and clarity.

You don’t need to bounce back. You need to move forward—with intention, support, and the kind of strength that doesn’t always show up in a mirror but definitely shows up in your life.
