How to stay consistent when things get boring
Look, I know I JUST said I want you to be bored. But I also want you to have fun!
For some people, it’s hard to find joy in the grind of the process even if they know deep down it’s worth it. If you can trick yourself into enjoying the tedious need-to-dos, the odds of sticking with lifestyle changes, reaching your goals, & maintaining progress long term are much greater.
How can you reframe or remix the boring stuff to feel fresh & fun?
☀️ Take your fitness outside or try a new gym (look for free trials). A change of scenery can give that same sense of motivation as when you were just starting out. Find a workout partner. Schedule walks with friends. Drive to a new spot to walk vs doing the same neighborhood loop.
🏄🏼♀️ When it comes down to it, movement is movement. Unless you’re training for something specific, try a group fitness class, take a lesson to learn a new sport, join a rec league team… don’t be afraid to try new things as an adult!
👟 Buy new shoes or a gym outfit. Look good, lift good 💁🏼♀️ Buy a reusable water bottle that reminds you to grab for it often. Treat yourself to a fresh set of sheets to make going to bed earlier more enticing.
🌮 Try new recipes/ingredients for meal prep. Pretend you’re on the show “Chopped”: at the grocery store randomly select an item you wouldn’t normally use & build a meal around it.
⭐️ Celebrate non-scale victories. Hype yourself up for milestones that have nothing to do with scale weight or body comp in general. Mental shift? Yasss! PR of any kind? A rockstar! Limit screen time, add an hour of sleep, hit a daily step goal, etc? Unstoppable!
🧠 Shift your mindset from “I have to” to “I get to”. I get to choose what I consume & have reliable food sources available to me. I have the capability of moving my body with purpose; how & when I move is on my terms. I have access to clean, dependable water & a comfortable bed to sleep on. There truly is joy in being fortunate enough to have the privilege of making daily lifestyle choices.
When it gets boring, how you respond to the monotony is up to you. Consistency cannot depend on fleeting motivation; you have to decide to cultivate enjoyment in the process.
